Whirlpool Cabrio Washer and Dryer Review

The long awaited, by at least 2 whole people. ;)

These are awesome, awesome, AWESOME. Oh, and did I mention, awesome?

This washer is huge, HUGE I tell you. Well, it's a standard sized washer, but the inside is huge. I never dreamed one could wash so many clothes at the same time. And have them all come out clean. The only downside is that once they are dry, you have so many more clothes to fold/hang up/put away all at once. Which I hate to do. Anyway.

The Cabrio doesn't have the big agitation thingy sticking up in the middle taking up most of the room in the washer. Thus you don't have to situate your clothes around it, and you can get a LOT more clothes in. I got the black model with the clear lid, which is awesome, you can watch it wash. This model has a few more features than the white model without the clear lid. It has some awesome features, like double rinse, and features for extra-dirty clothes. It has a digital "remaining time" display, so as you set your features for the current load, you can see how long it will take to complete. It has 3 automatic dispensers, one for soap/color safe bleach, another for chlorine bleach, and a third for fabric softener. You can use either liquid or powder soap, but if you use a color-safe bleach, you must use the same as your soap is, i.e. both liquid or both powder, but not one of each.

So far all of my clothes have come out wonderfully clean. My only real complaint is that if you don't go put them in the dryer as soon as they are done washing, they sometimes get so wrinkled from sitting that even the dryer can't get the wrinkles out.

The Cabrio dryer is awesome too. Plenty big enough to hold the large loads of the washer (well, one would hope, they are a set), and dries quickly. It also has a boatload of settings to choose from. It too has a digital remaining time display, which adjusts as your clothes dry. It actually gauges how wet your clothes still are and adjusts the time accordingly. One thing you will want to do is make sure you have the setting for how dry you want them set to "more," otherwise you may find several items still damp when it stops. Changing this to "more" very nearly eliminates that problem. If, however, you want to take your clothes out while they are still damp and hang them to finish drying, there is a setting for that as well.

Ok, that's my take on them. A lot of money, I never would have dreamed I'd spend THAT much on a washer, but after using them, I am completely satisfied that I did the right thing.

If you have any questions about them that I haven't answered here, feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an e-mail.

Our Cabrio is 3 years old, the lid shattered and now the drive bearing is going out. Nothing that $495.00 won't take care of. Jeans come out a mess. What a over priced crappy washer.

I bought the 6400 used, and wish I had never in my lifetime laid eyes on that machine. I am getting a "partial" refund on Monday, and guess I'm lucky to be getting that. It has leaked with the day I got it...not once have I done a load that hasn't left a puddle coming out from in front of the machine. It sounds like a 787 readying itself for takeoff when it's on the spin cycle. It's the biggest waste of space I've ever seen. I'm buying a washer that has NO bells and whistles on Monday...I could care less if I have a machine that the neighbors envy, as long as it just WASHES MY CLOTHES, SPINS THEM WITHOUT TURNING THEM INTO A NAUTICAL ROPE, AND DOESN'T ATTEMPT TO WASH MY FLOOR DURING THE RINSE CYCLE. Whirlpool, you should be ASHAMED.

Just had a Cabrio steam dryer delvered and already the drum light button on the control panel does not work. Also, my manual says that I can change the preset dryrness level from setting #1 to 2 or 3 but I am unable to do that. I called the place where I bought this appliance from and I was told that they would make a service call. I am insisting that they give me a new dryer because I don't have time for these service calls and that was the reason I bought a new dryer. I will call again on Monday and insist that they give me a new dryer. After reading all the negative comments, I am thinking maybe I should just ask for my money back and get some other brand. What are your thoughts.

I would not be exaggerating if I said my my wife and I have never purchased a product we've been so unhappy with. All the problems stated above are true. Marginally clean clothes Knotted into little balls and now expensive repair bills "code 50". It spins clothes out nice and I have no complaints about the dryer. But the washer.....what a waste of money!!
DO NOT buy this machine!!!

I wish I had found this website before I purchased my Cabrio! I HATE IT!!
I thought I was purchasing the nicest, top of line washer/dryer and it is crap!
You think you can load it up, you can not! Your clothes do not come clean if you put to many things in it. I wash all my clothes on bulk setting so that water gets in there and washes it. Washing sheets/blankets? Forget about it! They get tangled up and are just NOT clean! I can wash an outfit, pants.shirt.bras and panties.. and that is it with the knowledge that they are clean. If I try those with a couple of towels, they are not clean.
I have had the repair man out here now for the third time, the first a penny got sucked into the pump and cracked the plastic, the water flooded my bathroom and caused major damage so make sure that no coins get slipped into your wash on accident! I have kids, so somehow coins get in the wash! :) The rapiar man fixed the crack, it reopened, he fixed it again .. I am JUST doing a load of laundry.. guess what? A FLOOD .. so here we go again! I just want to chuck the crap outside and go buy a standard $400 cheapo that will last for 30 years, instead of this 3 year old $2000 P.O.S!!

I've had a cabrio washer and dryer since august 2009,the white model without glass. Before i bought it, i read the reviews and got scared, i spoke to my salesperson at J.C. Perreault in St Rock l'achigan in Quebec,( by the way he's a friend ) and he reassured be that if i wasn't satisfied he would take hem back; to this day, april 14, 2010 i did not have any problems; the only concern i have ,is that the dryer is not verry effeecient, it takes a long time to get the clothes really dryer, no tangling clothes or ripped clothing. Did they change the conception of the machine or am i simply a lucky guy, go figue.

@Pierre

Bought mine at the same place (JCP) and i'm enjoying it too. It wrinkles more than other models, but i'm very satisfied with it. I have the matching dryer, and it's really fast. Maybe make sure your vent is not blocked or the opening is wide enough. I had to replace mine with a bigger model (not the usual cheap plastic ones that only open 2 inches)

Ours washer lasted about a year past the 1 year warranty before it self destructed. We put one light blanket in and went to bed, the next morning it had walked to the middle of the room before shutting down. It had busted the door switch and shut down but not before busting the plastic tub, "yes the tub is plastic"
Our extended warranty refunded the purchase price less tax and the cost of the warranty. We sold the drier and now have a Samsung Front load pair for almost a year. Runs quite, no tangles, and cloths are clean with no damage.
Good luck with your new POS, hope you got the extended warranty and your homeowners insurance is paid up.

Thx to all here..I was on the way to purchase the Cabrios...but..no thx now. Way too many negatives !

Went today and bought the 'Commercial Grade' Maytag Bravios....with good feedback and a good warranty, at Lowes. Worth a few extra bucks to go for the commercial grade looks like. Nice rebates on them too on for the month of April.

I had the Maytag Neptunes for 13 years or more..never any problems except a warranteed door seal. Just was time to replace after the dryer wore out...won't dry anymore......so wahy pay to fix a 13 year old dryer. Yes..too bad we usually buy both new units when this happens..but old age on the Neptunes.....so did that.

Hope I'm as lucky with these Maytags as the previous.

That Whirlpool Cabrio pair .. yiikes..scary from all the reviews here and elsewhere. Whirlpool needs to get their act together ! Must have design faults.

Wish me luck..guess we need it it these days, on Cars..major appliances....home loans..etc !!

Anonymous said...

To the person who thinks you did well by buying a Maytag Bravo instead!! NEWSFLASH DING DING DING! The Bravo is the same thing as a CABRIO!!!!! Whirlpool uses the Maytag Name to grab customers who think Maytag is the elite washer HA HA HA. sorry, it's true!

Anonymous said...

Hey..I'm a long time Apple guy too..but why are you on this subject of Washers and Dryers Bud ? Jeez..what's wrong with you ??

Anonymous said...

Why the HA Ha ? You wishing me bad luck like you had ?

What a wonderful person you must be .

Yes I, and lots others know that whirlpool bought Maytag ?

So..since we know where you are coming from..plz post technical differences(verified) between the Maytag Bravos..and the Whirlpool Cabrios as of release dates Aril 10, 2010 ?

OK... lets see it ?

Thx

Anonymous said...

Oh, to THE' Ha Ha Anonymous' :

Here's a hint for you........the Cabrio's and the Maytag Bravio have completely DIFFERENT transmissions. Very different ! Now I doubt you even knew Washers have, transmissions did you ? Guess what..that's the most expensive major part of a washer. That's the real gut of the machine. Computer boards are the brain we'll say ok ?

So..let's see what you know..tell me which transmission is in the Cabrio' ? And where is it made ?

This time do some research, ok ? Remember, we are comparing the Whirlpool Cabrios to the Maytag Commercial Bravios. Not the other Maytags, like the CENTENNIAL ETC.

Standing by for real facts from you.......

Anonymous said...

Folks I agree with the Anonymous who went for the Maytag Commercial Bravios ! I bought those also after reading so many negatives on the Cabrios.

Like that person, I understand Whirlpool bought Maytag. BUT, BUT...they actually do have the Commercial Bravio built to different standards, with beefy parts, and a different Transmission than the Cabrios. There IS a difference..and a reason they do that.

Mine are terrific so far , and the warranty I have on them is good. I'm not saying they won't have a service call some day...that happens on all major appliances usually sometime.

So take a look at these in the store and find a sharp salesperson who knows these things. You find the Bravios are not as pretty to look at as the Cabrios or some others...but..look at the features...and the materials used on the inside.

These are worth a look at least.

Anonymous who bought them also here, knows what they are talking about . That person did their homework, as I did.

Good Luck folks in your decisions.

After removing a blanket I have washed THREE times only to find it STILL SOILED I came to find reviews on this horrible machine!

I absolutely HATE this machine. My husband bought it for me in Dec 08' after our machine ran its very last cycle!!! I

I was uber excited! This looked to be the best thing ever. Given we are a large family I was ecstatic and could not wait to use these machines (W&D).

I absolutely hate this washer! I wish my husband had not bought it. So often my clothes come out nasty, and I have to wash the load AGAIN.

IF you are a Cloth Diapering family, DO NOT- I REPEAT DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE! There is not enough water to soak your diaper and wash them at all. Whenever I have washed out CD I have every sing time had to run them through 4 cycles just to get them clean.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE MACHINE! Total waste of money!!!!

Curious to know how old all these comments are. I just got done replacing the outer drum and drive shaft assembly on my cabrio washer. Cost was $180 dollars and about 2 hours of my time. The machine had been making a howling sound on spin for about a year. Started when the washer was a year and a half old. Finally got so loud you couldn't hear the TV in the next room with the door closed! Haven't had any of the other troubles listed. Never have liked this washer and dryer. Very hard on clothes and the dryer needs to be on extra dry ALL the time to get large loads dry. Don't buy Cabrio!

I was so impressed with the large capacity of the tub that I was sold. But, when I saw the little water used in washing I was in a panic and very skeptical. I gave it the ultimate test-washing the rug in my dogs doghouse! Their doghouse outside gets sooo dirty with mud and dog smell. I was AMAZED at how clean it got and their was no doggy odor. I did not get the matching dryer, but my large capasity dryer does fine. Sometimes my jeans do come out twisted, but I just shake them and throw them in the dryer and they come out OK. I use Tide detergent and Downey. The washer is so quiet, I can do wash when everyone in the house is asleep. My only regret is that I didn't get the one with the glass top. What does go on in there?!!!

Anonymous said...

The worst washer you can buy. I had my Cabrio washer for a little over a year and the door will not lock, so the washer won't start. You have to push down on it each time to get it to lock. Then the load becomes unbalanced nine out of ten washes. When it becomes unbalanced it bangs around and stops. It is full of rust, leaks water on the floor and the clothes never are completely clean. It is the biggest waste of money. DO NOT BUY THE WHIRLPOOL CABRIO WASHER.

I purchased the Cabrio Washer and Dryer as a set, two years ago and only had one problem that had a quick fix....the smell of mold came from the washer one day and I was ready for it. I used the cleaned the washer on the "clean" cycle as instructed, with bleach, and no more smells or problems. Now, the handle of the lint filter broke off last week and I am on line to get a new one for the dryer...it just snapped off when I pulled it out to clean it, like I do before using it EVERY TIME. Other than those minor things....THE SET WORKS WONDERFULLY AND I AM STILL VERY HAPPY THAT I PURCHASED THE SET AT 50% OFF WHEN BOSCOV'S CLOSED IN OUR CITY. I was skeptical aout the washer getting the closes really clean, but it does. It also saves me on water usage....I actually saw a difference in our water bill and there are only two of us living at home. I highly recommend both the washer and dryer. We have had three people living her and we wash about two to three times a week, year round...I hate dirty clothes gathering in hampers and stinking the house up.

WASHER>>BIGGEST PEICE OF SHIT MADE!I get my clothes dirty when I work. Heavy jeans work shirts and my whites get dirty to. But this "CABRIO" will not get my clothes clean! Also the Bleacher dispenser sucks! It's a cheap lil. rubber hose broke the WP rep. said it would cost like 150$ After they so called fixed it( certified WHirlPOOL Maintenance MAN ) I said hell no I will not pay it!! You can't restart this stupid machine . I like my old traditional one I could control. I like to let my clothes soak a Long time. All these BS timers and how they are set certain cycles Who decides these>>> some DUMBASS?If I had my choice I would buy a cheap SIMPLE tradition top loader washer. This washer has to many bells and whistles to crash! DON"T buy it you'll be sorry you spent the money.

All I can say if you are considering purchasing the Cabrio, RUN, and RUN FAST, HARD, AND FAR! I've never been so disappointed in a product in my entire life. I purchased my Cabrio w/d set in 06; and it's been a total disaster. In fact, I am waiting for yet another repairman for the washer. It continuously gets out of balance, flashes the UL code, even when it's empty! Go figure. Additionally, when it's spinning, it now sounds like a 747 taking off; and the set is in the garage, the door (a solid wooden one) to the house is shut, and the noise overtakes the television. I understand there is a class action against Whirlpool and I have every intention of participating.

I just ran the first loads through my dad's new Whirlpool Cabrio washer and dryer. What a joke! There is no comparison with our 25 year old Maytag 608 series units. Jeans that always came out clean from the old washer are now still dirty coming out of the Cabrio. The dryer takes forever, even when just one set of king bedsheets is in it! And no, we did not set the equipment up wrong, my dad repaired washers and dryers for 20 years on a commercial route.
DON'T BUY THIS JUNK!!

Anonymous said...

Don't be fooled I have had the Cabrio washing machine for 5 years, yes they are big & they do get clothing clean but the pull bras & underwear below the drum and over time those items will clog the drain and seize up the impeller. I have tried to open the top to pull out the drum but there is no clear method to do that. And the repair is not cheap both times it was in excess of $300.00. I'd never buy such a crappy machine again.

The Cabrio is by far the worst washing machine ever built. I spent about $1000 on it and it is terrible. Won't stay balanced, error codes all over the place. Whirlpool won't provide reasonable service or support. This machine is junk -- period!

I have had the Cabrio washer and dryer from Sears for 2 years. Hate the washer. It is pinching my clothes and putthing holes in them, even with small loads. If only I could get back my 10 year old Maytag. Most online comments are manufacturer ads so be careful!!!

We outfitted our new house, back in 2006 with all Whirlpool and KitchenAid (also owned by Whirlpool) appliances, of which two are the Cabrio washer and dryer. Every one of the appliacnes with the exception of the built in oven/microwave combo have been a sore dissapointement. The Cabrio dryer has been functioning properly but it is very loud. The Cabrio washer doesn't clean well, has torn holes in clothes had had a couple small repair problems and now the main bearing on the bering/shaft assembly have worn out. The issue here is that Whirlpool does not sell the shaft/bearing assembly, you must purchase the entire tub. Approximately $250 plus 50-60 shipping. Call it $300. We are considering purchasing an "old fashioned" washing machine and taking this one out to an open field and using it for target practice. We will NEVER buy anothe product from Whirlpool/KitchenAid again. The other appliances....We have a double door refirdgerator that had to be "rebooted" two days after we purchased it and peridically starts raising the temperature on its own so we have to unplug it and plug it back it. The ceramic cooktop had a burner stop working two months after we bought it. Fortunatley that one was covered under warranty. When I contacted Whirlpool about the washing maching tearing holes in the clothes, their response was that they would remember that for future designs. Also, I think Energy Star is a fraudulent rating. This washer uses a large stepper motor that is constantly running. Yes it uses less water, but it never has done a good job cleaning clothes....so what is the use.

I bought the Cabrio 6700 in Oct, 2008. I checked Consumer reports first to get a good washer. After several months I wasn't satisfied with how dirty everything still was. I started reading reviews and found this blog. Perhaps an office workers clothes get clean but a service plumbers clothes don't. It also doesn't wash the dog beds of my 4 boxers or the bathroom or kitchen throw rugs. They just fold over on themselves and trap the dirt inside. I have been spending more money and time at the laundromat than ever before. I tried pausing the load and adding water and sometimes that helped, but usually I would wash one dog bed or throw rug about 3-4 times to try to get the dirt out. How is that for saving the planet and the water and the money? Now, today I got the dreaded F51 code. Since finding all the poor results from Whirlpool, my husband and I just went to the store and spent what would have been the high cost of repairs and bought a top load agitator model. The salesman says nothing lasts as long as it used to, so I probably won't get 25 years out of it, but they have designed these things into planned obsolesence, supposedly because new technology will replace them more efficiently in a few years, but probably so they can try to get more money from us in a few years. There are some derisive comments from younger people on here, assuming that we are old for not being happy with these machines, but with age comes wisdom, and for me that means stopping while I am not out more money on the Cabrio.

Have had one for three years....no problems...cleanist clothes.. huge water savings...
with three kids, four dogs, three cats..
yes we do a lot of laundry. Two loads a day. Incredible unit. Guess we got a good one in the run of the Cabrios...

I just bought this set although I am fightened after reading all of this negativity. I am hoping that it is because nobody reports good, only bad.
I had a front loader for 12 years and hated it. It molded and smelled like rotten eggs. I had my home mold tested and was told by the inspector that my wahser was contaminated and to dispose of it immediately. I did.
I searched for over a month as I was looking for an old fashioned white one with an agitator. I did not want anything wiht a computer. After 11 stores and 31 days of shopping extensively, there is no such creature unless you buy one that is apartment sized. I have 3 kids and do ALOT of laundry. I refused to buy from Brandsmart again as I had done so for the past 16 years. It seems that they get knocked around appliances and although pretty on the outside, the insides that you cannot see are banged up.
I hope my cabrio is better than these comments. I am an unemployed mom with no hope to repurchase or replace. I could not even afford the extended warranty. Still dont know if I should have considered, any comments on it?
Wish me luck.

Thanks for all of your posts! I purchased my Cabrio set in February/March of 2007 (I can't remember). I have been very happy with my washer and dryer, but about 2 weeks ago I started getting the F1 error. At first, I thought it was because I had been washing something unusually large and that it had become unbalanced in the basket. Nope. The F1 continued. I got around it for a few days by using cold water and selecting a wash size - rather than relying on Auto Select. But it still came back. Before I called Whirlpool, I found a message board on FixYa.com (http://www.fixya.com/PostComment.aspx?thid=423788&prdid=521123&ctgid=0), and I'm sooooo glad! I phoned Whirlpool (and acted as if I had never heard of the recall). Ashley, the operator, was very sweet and arranged for a repairman to come out on the next business day at no charge, despite the fact I have no idea if we have an extended warranty on this nearly 4-year-old machine. Shortly after my call to Whirlpool (I was entertained by the fact that they thanked me for calling Maytag), the repair shop phoned me directly to confirm the appointment. The repair shop's representative was the first to mention a recall. So, today is that first business day. The repairman came and told me that my problem was that I wasn’t using Hi-E detergent. When I mentioned how old the machine is, he recanted because this machine wasn’t Hi-E in 2007. So, he checked the control board. Much to my “surprise”, that’s where the problem lies. He called the shop and was given the authorization code to fix it – in 3 to 5 business days - for free, because I have an extended warranty. I’m pretty sure I don’t, but I think they’re trying not to spill the beans about the recall (even though said beans are clearly all over the floor). The repairman told me something interesting before his departure. He told me, sort of hush-hush, that I had ought to try to extend my warranty further. In his experience, these control boards only last 3 to 4 years. Then, they have to be replaced at a cost of $200 for the part, $200 for labor. I say, how do they know they only last for 3 years when all the control boards have been faulty? Good luck to you all and keep posting!

Sneedy said...

I purchased the Whirlpool Cabrio 9 days ago. On the second day the board gave me error codes. I called Sears to pu and they informed me that there is a 15% restocking fee. I paid 1583 for the set. Hmmm
I had the Maytag Neptunes for 12 years and had a severe mold problem. Would never own another front loader.
I debated as to whether I should just return them and start over, but with what? Every washer out there has a computer chip in the mother board. Also, all of the new machines are internally plastic. This means I can spend more money to get a different design but will have the same issues. I considered the Bravos, The Oasis, and more but they are all internally the same. Kenmore and Whirlpool are the same. Every repairman will tell you to get a direct dial, problem is the biggest one you can get will run you back and forth to the dry cleaners to do those comfortors and rugs. The govt is fazing them out because of water conservative. Thanks alot! Oh, before I forget, the Sears that you are used to, at least the Sears that I grew up knowing as the "Quality" products and the best service does not exist any longer. They all lie and try to sway you into buying what is the most expensive as they have told me that they are all 100% commission. You are no better Off if you go to a warehouse like Costco or BJ's as the service will be the same---NONE!
For now I am keeping the Whirlpool Cabrio as I refuse to pay for the restock fee. I will in fact tell everyone that I know of my experiences. There are some positive comments out there, but very few. I do like the tub size and the noise level is very minimal. I also like the cleanliness of the clothes. I just want it to perform when I push the buttons. I have to keep checking on it because when the error codes come up, it stops without any warnings or noise.
I did get the one with the agitator which seems to be the better of the two. I was advised by a repairman never to buy the kind with the plates as they cannot handle the weight of wet heavy clothing.
They dryer by the way is very nice. I got an error code on it as well--AF, still dont know what it means. It does a good job drying the clothes and no wrinkles. I put 14 towels in it and it dried them all in 40 minutes. I also noticed that I have read alot of bad press on this machine about how it tears up the clothes. I have found that not to be true with the agitator. I am keeping my fingers crossed. If I end up getting a dud, I will share that info too. I have also found that most people on blogs are negative and nobody reports the positive. Hope this helps.
I would not buy again, or at least buy it from Sears.

Do NOT, Do NOT buy the Cabrio whirlpool washer and dryer! So not worth the money they cost. I wish I could have my old hand-me-down washer and dryer back. We moved into a new house and we decided we needed new appliances too. Worst mistake ever! Our brand new washer had so many error codes we could not use for the first couple of weeks until a repairman came to fix it. We've had it for a year now it for some weird reason the washer keeps making the breaker jump! nothing else is used on that particular breaker other than the washer. So for every use, I have to reset the breaker or turn it back on. If I just continuously use it without resetting it will make the breaker jump during the cycle. As for my dryer, I ABSOLUTELY hate it!!!! Regardless of what I do, change the setting, add dryer sheets, use wrinkle guard fabric softener/ dryer sheets, untangle the clothes, all my clothes are damped and wrinkled always!!! And I've noticed turning up the "dry more" setting is ruining my colored clothes... It's almost as bad as if I were using a laundry mat dryer. If it wasn't for all the money my husband spent, I would have asked for new ones already! Do NOT spend your money!
